Live, Chenda Melam puts dozens of players on one rhythm at Kerala’s biggest temple festivals. The Chenda is a cylindrical, double-headed drum played with curved sticks. Its attack is sharp, and it carries a long way outdoors. Now put fifteen of them in unison. Few regional traditions hit that hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This kit brings that ensemble into your DAW whole. We recorded a 15-piece ensemble of temple percussionists, at the tempos the tradition actually uses. As a result, it is the fullest source of Indian drums for film scoring from this tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Chenda Melam?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chenda Melam is a Kerala temple percussion tradition. A large group of musicians play the Chenda together, usually alongside deity processions and festival events at the state’s major temples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players perform it at the biggest utsavams<\/em>, or temple festivals. There, the number of players and the sheer volume carry real ceremonial meaning. So the sound is not a backdrop to the occasion. In part, it is the occasion. The Chenda Melam announces how big the event is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
